2019 will truly be the year of innovation in smartphone cameras. The hype surrounding photography started with the Galaxy S10 Plus which was soon left behind by the Huawei P30 Pro device. Since then, we have witnessed the launch of many phones like OnePlus 7 Pro, Redmi K20 Pro, OPPO Reno 10x Zoom, etc. that want to challenge the reign of Huawei’s flagship device.
While we are expecting all brands to fight for the top spot in mobile photography this year, Xiaomi is preparing to launch the world’s first 64MP camera in its smartphone. It has been confirmed by XDA Developers which stumbled upon a string of code in the MIUI 10 Camera app referencing “64MP DUAL CAMERA” for watermark and 64MP “ultra-pixel” mode.
Previously, renowned leaker Ice Universe posted on Weibo that Xiaomi’s sub-group Redmi is working on a smartphone featuring a 64MP camera. Currently, there is only Samsung 64MP ISOCELL Bright GW1 lens in the market that can offer a 64MP resolution so it won’t be too far fetched to assume its availability in Xiaomi’s upcoming smartphone.
The ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor comes with pixels of 0.8μm size and supports 4-in-1 Tetracell technology meaning it can merge data from four pixels into one resulting in 16MP images with a pixel size of 1.6-micron.
Xiaomi is not the only company working to bring a 64MP camera in its smartphone as reportedly an upgraded Galaxy A70 smartphone, the Galaxy A70S will also come with the same feature. We’ll have to wait and see which company will be the first to offer this new feature to its users.
