Xiaomi has finally introduced its first ever pop-up camera smartphones, Redmi K20, and Redmi K20 Pro, which offer some killer features and a surprisingly affordable price tag. The company has been marketing the Pro variant of the device as the flagship killer, a title which was previously reserved for only OnePlus phones.
When Xiaomi first announced that it will be bringing a flagship device in its affordable Redmi series which branched out into a sub-group earlier this year, there was huge uncertainty about the future of Redmi smartphones and whether the company will opt for the recent trend of premium pricing.
We are glad to inform that although the specs sheet of the two devices is quite admirable, the prices do reflect the company’s preference of offering quality features which can match the budget of a common man. Let’s dive further to see what makes Redmi K20 Pro special.
Design & Display
Both the Pro and the standard variant share the same design language featuring a beautiful gradient pattern quite different from the one we have seen in other mid-range and flagship devices this year.
It also comes with a glass body which will make it a fingerprint magnet but you cannot complain much as the smartphone will instantly make you fall in love with its design.
We also get a 6.39-inch FHD+ OLED display which does not feature any cut-out or a notch thanks to the pop-up camera phones that slides in or out when needed. There is also an in-display fingerprint sensor at the front preserving the beautiful design at the back of the device.
Though we haven’t tested the phone, the inclusion of an OLED display will ensure punchy and vibrant colors which will definitely add to the overall viewing experience of the smartphone.
The reason we are calling it a flagship phone is the inclusion of Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset and it is surprisingly the most affordable smartphone, under $400, which comes with this SoC under the hood. It also comes with a 6GB or 8GB variant which will make it a powerhouse when it comes to multi-tasking or heavy usage.
The user will get the option of 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB of storage options. We are not yet sure about the availability of a MicroSD card slot and are waiting on the company’s specs sheet to confirm this feature.
To provide power to this beast of a phone, Xiaomi has included 4000mAh battery in Redmi K20 pro which comes with 27-watt fast charging which the company claims will charge the smartphone from 0 to 100% in around 73 minutes.
In the camera department, the company has provided a triple camera setup which has been trending in the smartphone world this year.
Following are the camera details of the smartphone:
- 48MP main camera, f/1.75, 0.8 microns, Sony IMX586
- 13MP ultra-wide lens, f/2.4, 1.12 microns, 124.8-degree FOV
- 8MP telephoto lens, f/2.4, 1.12 microns, 2x optical zoom
Unfortunately, none of the lenses come with optical image stabilization and thus the user will have to keep their hand stable while taking pictures.
When it comes to the front camera, Redmi K20 Pro provides a 20MP selfie shooter with f/2.2, 0.8 microns similar to the motorized setup we have seen in other pop-up camera smartphones in the market.
Price and Availability
As we have mentioned before, the smartphone will come with two RAM options with different storage capacities. Here are the prices of different variants of Redmi K20 Pro (the prices in dollars are according to the current currency exchange rates):
- 6GB + 64GB variant: 2,499 yuan (~$362)
- 6GB + 128GB variant: 2,599 yuan (~$376)
- 8GB + 128GB variant: 2,799 yuan (~$405)
- 8GB + 256GB variant: 2,999 yuan (~$434)
The smartphone will be available in China from 6th June and as for other regions, the company still have to announce when and where it will be launched in the coming weeks.
A new report also suggests that the new smartphone will be launched as Mi 9T Pro in Russia whereas the standard K20 will be named as Mi 9T. We have to wait and see whether the company will relaunch it with a different name in the international market.
