USB 4 supporting 100W power supply may arrive by 2020 in smartphones

USB 4 charging port

With the advancement in mobile technology, we have come to expect much more from our beloved smartphones. We do not just need a good battery life but the ease of charging that device in minimum possible time as well. While the USB Type C 3.1 is popular nowadays especially among the flagship devices, USB Promoter Group is close to developing the USB4 specification.

According to Anand tech, the USB 4 spec is in 0.7 version and the group believes that we will see the retail products featuring the new technology by the end of 2020. USB 4 is based on Thunderbolt technology and will offer up to 40 Gbps bandwidth. Moreover, USB 4 will also come with backward compatibility with USB 3.2, Thunderbolt 3, and USB 2.0 and works with USB Type C.

The USB 4 will also support for 100W power supply, HDMI 2.0 and Display 1.2 (DP 1.2) standards for video transmission. It will be able to connect with a 5K display or two 4K displays simultaneously.

An official specification of USB 4 is expected to come this summer. The USB Promoter Group expects that it will bring a radical change in the tech industry and is mulling over creating a new logo and branding scheme.

Android smartphones will likely catch on with the new tech and we can expect companies like Samsung, Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, etc. to introduce the new spec in their flagship phone. Apple, on the other hand, is still clinging to its lighting port and has yet to even catch up to USB Type C charging port.
