Every year we see a new craze in the smartphone industry. Earlier it was all about the AI and the highest screen to body ratio and now it seems 2019 will the year of foldable phones. The war has already been started and the top foldable phones are already out by Samsung and Huawei.
However, other smartphones manufacturers are also gearing up to give a hard time to the two first comers. Like it or not, the tech is already here and the manufacturers are already in to launch their own versions, irrespective of whether we really need such foldable phones or not.
Anyways, we have here compiled a list of the top foldable phones that are either launched or you can expect them to launch very soon in the coming future.
After the evergoing leaks, the Galaxy Fold is finally out and it comes with a jaw-dropping price of $1980. The phone has a 7.2-inch screen size that folds over itself to go in your pocket easily. On the front, there is a 4.6 inches HD+ Super AMOLED screen to use as a phone.
it packs a Snapdragon 855 with 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. On the optics front, it will feature a triple rear camera on its back with 16MP+12MP+12MP lenses, and a 4380mAh battery that is comprised of two batteries joined together because of the fold.
Huawei Mate X
Although Huawei promised to launch its foldable phone mid-summer, after Samsung launched the Galaxy Fold, the Chinese manufacturer responded soon. Huawei Mate X truly deserves a spot in the top foldable phones. Unlike Samsung’s device, it folds outside.
When unfolded, it’s an 8-inch tablet while upon folding you will get a 6.6-inch AMOLED display with 1148 x 2480 pixels resolution. Huawei Mate X also comes with the Kirin 980 flagship processor and has 8GB RAM paired with a512 GB internal memory.
Oppo Foldable Phone
The recently teased device from Oppo has earned its place in the top foldable phones list. Although the company’s VP has made it clear that it won’t be launching any time soon but the intricate design of the device resembles a lot with that of the Huawei Mate X.
The above picture is all you can go on about the Oppo Foldable phone. It can clearly be seen that the phone comes with a Mate X-like hinge and also has a grip bump on the side. Oppo showcased the phone at MWC but did not tell when it plans to launch the device.
TCL and its sister company CSOT showed off a foldable phone prototype at the MWC 2019. Being much simpler and less flashy than the ones from Huawei and Samsung, it definitely has a spot on top foldable phones.
TCL says that it aims to manufacture such phones without the humongous price tag that Samsung and Huawei have set. According to the company, their phone will fall somewhere along the $1000 mark.
Since the price is the major play of the company, you can expect the phone to launch pretty late in 2019 or maybe in 2020. Moreover, the display quality or the specs might also be downgraded, keeping in mind the price.
Motorola Razr 2019
It seems Motorola has been quietly working on a foldable phone that will soon make its debut. According to the surfaced rumors, it will carry a very different approach to the foldable phones. The device will also carry the Moto Razr branding.
The phone will just be like a flip phone except that the whole inner surface will be the screen. Rumors have been around for quite a while now. Earlier in February 2017 Yang Yuanqing, the CEO of Lenovo (which owns Motorola) told TechRadar, “With the new technology, particularly foldable screens, I think you will see more and more innovation on our smartphone design.”
We’ve also seen a foldable phone pattern from Motorola in 2018 which suggests it will have a book-like design. The patent describes two cameras, as well as hinges at the top, bottom and middle, and the ability to be propped up into a tent-like display mode.
LG never seems to remain too far behind the major manufacturers like Samsung. Recently it announced the LG G8 with amazing features days after the Galaxy S10 launch.
Earlier LG also announced a foldable TV at the CES 2019 so it was obvious that the company will jump in this arena soon. The patent documents also show the names of LG foldable phones like the Foldi and Duplex.
LG has also mentioned that it won’t rush in making the foldable device so although it would still be among the top foldable phones, keeping in mind that LG always comes up with unique ideas, it won’t launch until late 2019.
Xiaomi Mi Flex
Recently Xiaomi Foldable phone has also appeared in a hands-on video which suggests that the launch of such a phone from the Chinese giant may be nearer than we think.
The device has also been shown off in a video by company president and co-founder Lin Bin. Xiaomi handset is initially shown in tablet mode in the video, but then both sides of the device are folded inwards at two points, leaving only the middle third of the phone, hence compacting into a small but hefty phone.
In a message with the video, Lin Bin wrote, “Xiaomi double folding mobile phone is coming! This symmetrical double-folded form perfectly combines the experience of the tablet and mobile phone, which is both practical and beautiful”
