Samsung foldable smartphone that is expected to debut in 2019 (most likely Galaxy X) will have a flexible battery. The rumor has originated from China where industry insiders privy to Samsung’s battery-making process say the company is about to make a breakthrough.
According to ITHome, Samsung’s battery division Samsung SDI has perfected foldable battery designs with capacities between 3,000 mAh and 6,000 mAh.
Samsung SDI is a division for the production of batteries for electronics. It produces batteries for a wide range of products, including telephones, electric vehicles and bicycles, vacuum cleaners and energy banks.
Samsung SDI showcased flexible battery prototypes way back in 2014 so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the company make leaps now. The 2014 prototype had a low capacity, and it offered just only 210mAh of power. It was nowhere near what most smartphones offer now and what such devices need at the moment to stay running for at least a whole day.
If you’re familiar with Samsung rumors, then you know the Galaxy Note 9 is rumored to pack a monster 4,000 mAh battery, which should provide superior battery life to what’s available on the Galaxy Note 8 or S9+.
But the Galaxy X battery might go all the way up to 6,000 mAh, the kind of capacity that you don’t see on alluring Android phones. We’re obviously hoping for as high a number as possible, given the massive screen the Galaxy X will have: 7.3″ when opened, and 4.5″ when folded.
Some industry analysts believe they will probably be high capacity cells as the foldable smartphone would double up as a tablet when unfolded. Samsung will allegedly make these batteries in the coming months before the final quarter of 2018.
World Intellectual Property Organization has already approved Motorola’s patent for a foldable phone. Motorola the pioneer of phone industry looking to compete with Samsung here. Huawei has also announced to launch foldable phone in 2019. Two things would be most important here, one is the price segment, and the other is design usability with beauty not just the gimmick.
For now, there is no specs announced for Samsung foldable smartphone by the company, although it’s worth noting that recent reports have claimed the device will see an official announcement in February at MWC 2019, following the unveiling of the flagship Galaxy S10 series in January.
