Huawei was the first smartphone company to introduce a 5x optical zoom in its flagship Huawei P30 Pro and now Samsung is following its lead to bring the same technology in its upcoming phones.
According to a report from Korean media outlet, Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEM) is mass producing its new 5x optical module and if rumors are to be believed, we can expect the periscope camera in the upcoming Note series or the next year’s S series smartphones.

OPPO Reno was the second smartphone to provide this feature in its smartphone which will make Samsung third company to finally provide the trending optics in its devices.
The new module for 5x optical zoom will be 5mm thick and thus won’t be protruding from the back of Samsung’s smartphones but this does not mean that the camera setup will be entirely flat as it would depend on other camera modules as well.
Samsung’s 5x optical zoom module uses the similar light refracting prism as the Huawei P30 Pro and is expected to come vertically stacked on a smartphone. The South Korean smartphone maker has also shared some sample shots of the new optics in action and you can see the real-life performance of 1x, 2x and 5x zoom modes.
We’ll have to wait and see how it will perform outside of the company-designed tests to form an opinion about Samsung’s 5x optical zoom module.
