Oppo F9 vs Huawei Y9 2019: A Close Call

2018 has been the year of Chinese phones among which Oppo and Huawei remained prominent in the market. Both the companies have released a fair amount of phones in very short intervals all having bezel-less displays and exciting features. Oppo F9 and Huawei Y9 2019 are two of such offerings.

Both the phones come as mid-rangers and as per the prevailing norm, both are feature packed devices that come at affordable prices conforming the mid-range flagship phenomenon.

Oppo F9 is available in Pakistan for Rs 40,000 while Huawei Y9 2019 comes at Rs 37,999 Being so close to each other in terms of specs and price, we decided to let the phones battle out in every aspect to prove which one is offering better value for money.

Design

Both the phones are made out of the plastic body. While anyone can hardly disagree on the durability of plastic, one thing’s for sure. It looks and feels pretty cheap even compared to Aluminum let alone glass.

Oppo F9 vs Huawei Y9 2019 design

Though made out of polycarbonate, Oppo F9 greets you with more grip-friendly build between the two and gives out a feeling of being made out of glass whereas Huawei Y9 2019 looks plain cheap. The pattern on the F9’s back looks amazing with its gradient design.

Though we have already seen Nokia 6.1 Plus beat both these phones to dust regarding design language and choice of materials, we still think Oppo F9 is better between the two.

The placement of the fingerprint sensor and the power key is almost the same in both the phone. The power button is located on the usual right side in both the devices. along with the volume rocker in the Huawei while in Oppo F9 the volume keys are located on the left.

The SIM tray is located on left on both the phones. There is also an option of a dedicated memory card slot in both which is a plus as many users want external memory that can easily be replicated and is also portable.

On the bottom, you’ll find micro USB charging port on both the devices along with a speaker grill and a headphone jack.

Overall we really like and prefer the look and feel of Oppo F9 over the Huawei Y9 2019 only because of the firm grip and appropriate size that it provides. The pattern on the F9’s back and the gradient color puts it leagues ahead of the Y9 2019.

Display

Oppo F9 uses a 6.3-inch large display with Full HD+ resolution (2340 x 1080) which equates 409ppi and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 while Huawei Y9 2019 has a bigger 6.5-inch Fullview display with the same resolution but with a lesser pixel density of 396ppi.

Oppo F9 vs Huawei Y9 2019 display

Both the phones have notched display but Oppo has adopted the waterdrop notch which is way smaller than the traditional one found on the Huawei Y9 2019. It also helps the Oppo F9 achieve a greater screen to body ratio, hence giving more screen state compared to the size.

A noticeable difference can be spotted in the viewing angles of both the phones where the Y9 gives too narrow angles to clearly watch the screen without color distortion and if you move further away, the colors on the screen begin to fade whereas Oppo F9 gives much wider angles in screen viewing and a more immersive experience.

The pixel density on the F9 is also higher hence it gives out slightly better color reproduction than the Y9 but you can only tell that if you place both the phones close to each other.

While playing video content, we noticed that the notch optimization was poor on the F9 and although being small, the small significantly hindered the content playing on the screen while on the Hauqwei Y9 2019 the notch hides in a black bar that is drawn on the top.

Software

There are a few phones in the market that come with a stock Android. Nokia 6.1 Plus being the prime example. Most of the brands come with a heavily customized skin on top of Android. Same is the case with Oppo F9, that comes with ColorOS 5.2 and Huawei Y9 2019 that is covered with EMUI 8.2.0. Both the phones come with Android 8.1 Oreo.

In terms of software, both the phones have a similar approach and layout to their home screens and placement of settings and options. Both are haunted by an equal amount of bloatware that comes pre-installed in the phones.

Though it’s a hard choice, we prefer EMUI over the Color OS because of its simple interface. The UI on ColorOS is more of a bouquet of different flowers arranged incoherently. Though it has many useful options, the software is quite cluttered.

Other than that, the notch optimization is also very poor in ColosOS. When you play video content, the tiny notch cuts down a portion of the screen instead of flattening it out like the Y9 2019.

One of the best things on Color OS is the multitasking pop-up. While playing a game or watching a video, just swipe inwards from the notch and you’ll come up with a customized bar with different apps of your choice. You can also change the apps in the multitasking menu.

EMUI also has some pretty useful options which include lowering down the display resolution to conserve battery, changing the warmth of display and the list goes on. Game mode is another useful feature which you can avail so that during those intense and immersive gaming sessions when you are enjoying a PUBG game with your buddies no one interrupts.

However, both the OS skins have their own usability but we like the EMUI more only because it offers a simple interface and is not cluttered like the color OS.

Performance & Battery

Huawei Y9 2019 comes with an in-house mid-range chipset, Kirin 710, while 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage drives this phone. Though Oppo F9 comes with the same Mediatek Helio P60 chipset as its predecessor Oppo F7. It also comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB internal memory.

Benchmark results of both the phones are pretty much the same with a minor difference in Antutu benchmark where F9 is ahead of Y9 2019. In Geekbench, Y9 2019 takes the lead in single core score and is beaten in multicore by F9.

OPPO F9 Benchmark Results

We did not notice any lag or any sign of slowing down on both the phones when browsing through them or surfing the internet, loading web pages and all the other activities that are the trait of a moderate smartphone user.

Heavy usage affected both the phone almost equally. Oppo F9 got a bit warmer and hence sluggish after some heavy gaming and intensive apps multitasking, however, this is where the Huawei’s GPU Turbo technology comes into play. The different could clearly be seen in gaming performance on both the phones.

Other than that, Oppo F9 aces the Y9 in almost every aspect of the performance. Oppo F9 packs a 3500 mAh battery that supports fast charging. The company claims that with 5 minutes of charge, you can have 2 hours of talk time.

Huawei Y9 2019, is a beast in terms of battery and packs a 4000mAh but sadly doesn’t support fast charging.

In our moderate usage tests, Oppo F9 consumed 13% battery while the Huawei Y9 2019 won with just 10% battery consumption in 1 Hour. This hints at almost 10 hours of screen on time which is absolutely huge.

On heavy usage and gaming, Oppo again lost its ground by consuming a 20% in 1 hour and Y9 2019 consumed 16% battery. Don’t get us wrong here. Oppo does perform good and present decent battery stats, it just can’t stand against the mammoth battery of Y9 2019.

Camera

OPPO F9 Vs Y9 2019 camera

Following the trends, both the phones come with a dual camera setup on their rear. Oppo packs a 16MP+2MP rear camera setup and a 25MP selfie camera, while the Huawei Y9 2019 provides dual camera setup on both front and back. A rear snapper with 16MP+2MP lenses and on the front 13MP+2MP come with the device.

Both the phones are capable of taking great shots but also have some limitations which shouldn’t be a problem because you cannot expect much in terms of the camera from a mid-range device.

Here are some sample pictures from both of the phones. You are the best judge here.

Above pictures from both the phones look to face a similar problem; oversharpness. Oppo F9 also oversaturates the colors which are far from natural. Overall we like this picture more on Huawei.

Picture with Super Vivid mode on OPPO F9

Huawei Y9 2019 comes with AI that enhances the colors based on scene recognition. Oppo F9 also comes with a super vivid mode that is used for the same purpose. Below are the pictures from the said modes.

Both the AI and the Super Vivid mode are a disaster. Not only do they saturate the colors to a point that looks artificial, but they also somewhat animate the overall look of the picture.

The HDR mode works better in Huawei Y9 2019 and that entirely depends upon the scenario because of its inconsistency in performing.

Though the above picture on both the phones is over sharpened, you can see that Huawei Y9 2019 fails to capture the colors of distant flowers and tunes all of them to yellow while they are not. Oppo F9, however, maintains the difference in orange and yellow flower, although oversaturated and over sharpened.

Low Light Shot on Huawei Y9 2019

Low light performance in both the devices is although not at par with the flagships in the market, it leaves you wanting more. Both have their cons. oppo tends to warm the color more while capturing more light but Huawei Y9 captures true colors while not being as crisp as its rival.

Though HDR mode works better at night in Huawei Y9 2019, this time it tends to overdo the picture and make it look like more processed. F9, however, produces mode softened image this time and the colors are also true to life.

The camera on both the devices is a mixed bag and a clear winner is not easy to decide as the line between them is thin. However, it all boils down to one’s personal preference. Some of you may like pooped up colors for your Instagram pictures and some may like more true to life colors.

Verdict

Despite being slightly different in price, Oppo F9 and Huawei Y9 2019 fare well against each other but it is truly hard to pick one, based solely on performance. If the camera is what you are after, both are worlds apart, yet similar in so many ways.

The looks on Oppo F9, however, are way superior to the Huawei Y9 2019. Its petal pattern on the back is definitely a looker. So which one will you pick as your daily driver? Do let us know in the comments below.
