The Taiwanese chipset maker, MediaTek, has launched its latest mid-range chipset Helio P90, in an event in china. The newest chip aims to bring flagship performance in mid-range phones.
Helio P90 is manufactured on 12nm process and has improved CPU and GPU as compared to its predecessors. One of the a improvements that it has gotten over its predecessors is in the AI department. Compared to the Helio P60, found in the Oppo F9 and the P70, it can provide four times better AI performance.
MediaTek Helio P90 is an octa-core processor and comes with 8 ARM cortex cores, two of which are the ARM Cortex A75 that clock at 2.2 GHz while the remaining six are the ARM Cortex A55 that work at 2.0 GHz. For the graphics, it includes a Power VR GM 9946 GPU.
Phones that will feature the Helio P90 will be able to support up to 8GB LPDDRX RAM and UFS 2.1 storage. The new processor can also support up to a 48MP camera or a combination of 24MP+16MP camera setup. This could be a hint that 48MP cameras in smartphones will soon become a norm.
MediaTek has included an APU in the Helio P90 to handle the AI tasks which can intelligently allocate AI tasks to the AI Accelerator or to the triple Image Processing Unit which will allow phones with Helio P90 to outperform others in this category.
The APU can recognize the type of content that is being displayed on the screen and optimize the display performance accordingly. More astonishingly, the company claims that the AI performance of the Helio P90 is better than Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and slightly lower than the latest 7nm Snapdragon 855 chipset.
