Huawei’s homegrown operating system, Hongmeng OS is faster than Android and MacOS, revealed the company’s CEO and co-founder Ren Zhengfei while giving an interview to a French magazine. He said Huawei’s software will come with less than 5 milliseconds processing delay
The Chinese smartphone maker took the wraps off its back up plan, Hongmeng OS after it was cut off by Google’s Android Platform due to the US ban. Though the US government has now eased the restrictions placed on Huawei which allows it to work again with Google, the company does not plan to abandon its custom-made operating system.
Zhengfei has also revealed that the software will have broader applications and apart from smartphones, will be used on routers, network switches, computers, tablets, and even data centers. Moreover, he also shared that Hongmeng OS will be a perfect platform for emerging technologies like including the Internet of Things (IoT) including smart home devices, and autonomous vehicles.
Huawei has a long path ahead if it wants to push aside Android OS but it may get the boost it wants from its domestic smartphone market. The company has already started to test Hongmeng OS with Chinese tech giants and smartphone vendors including Tencent, OPPO and Vivo. Xiaomi is also rumored to be the part of the pack but no confirmation has been provided regarding this news.
Huawei is set to hold its own developer conference (HDC 2019) on 9th and 11th August in Dongguan, China and we can expect the company to unveil its operating system at the event.
Previously, the company planned to ship 225 million smartphones with Hongmeng OS by the end of October 2019 and with the quick pace of the software’s development, we have to wait and see if the operating system will make it to the retail market this year.
