The mid-range category holds the utmost importance in the mobile phone market, just because of constant releases from companies that create a heavy competition. With amazing design and controlled prices, these devices are taking over the market. Huawei Y9 2019 and Honor 8X are the most recent examples of such phones.
Though both phones come from the same parent company, as Honor is also owned by Huawei, the phones are miles apart in specs, albeit belonging to the same mid-range category. The same price compelled us to perform a side by side battery comparison of the phones.
Battery Charging and Drain Tests
All the phones come with a slight difference in battery capacities. Huawei Y9 2019 comes with a 4000mAh battery that can be charged via a micro USB port. Unfortunately, doesn’t come with a fast charging technology which drags the charging time from 0% to 100% in 2 hours 26 minutes.
Honor 8X takes the lead in battery charging time. It charges from 0% to 100% in a shorter period of 2 hours 21 minutes. It is only because the Honor 8X packs a smaller battery of 3750mAh. With a difference of just 5 minutes, it is safe to say that both the phone take up almost an equal amount of time to fully charge up despite the difference in battery capacity
For our drain test, we charged the devices to 100% and played a 1080p video on all of them till every single drop of the battery was drained out. During the test, the brightness and the volume both were cranked to full and all type of connectivity was cut off i.e. no mobile data and no wifi.
Though we were hoping to see a substantial difference owing to the size of batteries in both phones, the Y9 2019 didn’t live up to the expectations owing to its huge battery. With a 4000mAH, though Huawei Y9 2019 topped the drain test, but not with a huge margin and gave only a playback time of 5 hours 10 minutes.
Though Honor 8X packs a battery with a considerably lower capacity which is why it took the least time to charge but just like the charging test the difference here is not so huge. Honor 8X lags behind in battery drain test with a playback time of 4 hours 38 minutes.
Honestly, we were expecting more of Huawei Y9 2019 with its mammoth battery. Even with no connectivity, the battery lasted only a little above 5 hours which is a tad disappointing.
Same goes for the Honor 8X. If you look proportionally on the difference in battery and the playback time, you can’t help but notice that the battery optimization on both the phones is almost the same.
With such huge batteries, we think that both the phones could have potentially performed well but poor battery optimization got in the way.
