Galaxy J6 and J4: are they worth your money?

Galaxy J6, J4

We just had a launch event of Samsung Galaxy J6 and Galaxy J4 in Pakistan. The devices had already made their way in the international market earlier in late May. We had these expectations that Samsung would maintain its brand aura and price the phones higher than they deserve and that’s exactly what happened.

The phones are priced outrageously high for their specs leaving us disappointed because other brands like Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi have managed to provide way better specs at such prices.

Galaxy J6

Galaxy J6

Galaxy J6 was launched at a jaw-dropping price of PKR 24,999 and comes with 5.6” Super AMOLED display with 18.5:9 aspect ratio and 720 x 1480 resolution. The phone packs Samsung’s Exynos 7870 Octa clocked at 1.6 GHz in 64GB/4GB and 32GB/3GB variants.

  • Screen Resolution: 1480 x 720 pixels
  • Processor: Exynos 7870 Octa
  • RAM: 3GB
  • Internal Storage: 32GB

Galaxy J4

Galaxy J4

Evaluating the specs with the price, we were amazed that Samsung had priced the Galaxy J4 so much higher while other brands are providing better alternatives in this range. J4 is priced at PKR 17,999 in the Pakistani market. Galaxy J4 features a 5.5” Super AMOLED screen with a 16:9 ratio and 720 x 1280 pixel resolution packs an Exynos 7570 Quad-core processor and will only be available with 16GB of internal memory and 2GB RAM.

Galaxy J4 Specs

  • Display: 5.5 inches
  • Screen Resolution: 720 x 1280 pixels
  • Processor: Exynos 7570 Quad
  • RAM: 2GB
  • Internal Storage: 16GB
  • Rear Camera: 13MP
  • Front Camera: 5MP
  • Battery: 3000mAh
  • OS: Android Oreo
  • Price: Rs. 17,999

What do others offer in this price range?

Galaxy J6 completely fails to compete with other phones currently available in the market as other brands are providing way more decent specs in this price range. Exynos 7870 used in the Galaxy J6 is an outdated processor and was launched in early 2016.

For an entry level phone such as the Galaxy J4, the price exceeds than what the phone deserves, leaving it to be a lone wolf in today’s competitive smartphone market.

Better Alternatives for Galaxy J6

Xiaomi, on the other hand, is offering the Mi A1 with 4GB RAM and 32GB memory at PKR 25,999 which has further stooped to PKR 22,000 during the sale. It packs a power efficient Snapdragon 625 which is known to handle heavy tasks efficiently and provides a smooth user experience. Besides, Mi A1 is an android one device with stock android which is a far more better option than Samsung’s buggy Experience UI.

Similarly Honor 9 Lite is another bang for the buck in this category which sells for the same price that Galaxy J6 was launched for. Honor 9 lite sports a Kirin 659 chip thats performance is at par with Snapdragon 625. It comes in 32GB/3GB and 64GB/4GB variants. Honor 9 lite’s distinctive feature is its dual camera setup at both the front and back. The phone boasts a 13MP + 2MP camera setup on the front as well as the back and comes with Android Oreo out of the box.

Better Alternatives for Galaxy J4

Galaxy J4, just like the J6, is overpriced for an entry-level phone with an old processor that struggles to perform day to day tasks smoothly. Xiaomi Redmi 4A, on the other hand, proves to deliver a better spec sheet comparatively. It packs a Snapdragon 425 and comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB/32GB internal memory, a handy 5” HD display and sits at a price of PKR 13,500 for the 32GB version.

The newly launched Redmi 5A HD also roasts the Galaxy J4 in spec comparison, featuring a 5” HD display, a 13 MP rear camera with Phase Detection Autofocus and Snapdragon 425 with 32GB/3GB and 16GB/2GB options and is just priced at PKR 14,499 at their official store.

We were utterly disappointed with the ridiculous pricing of the latest J series line up. Its high time Samsung realizes that it should stop selling its moniker and try to provide better specs with competitive pricing otherwise the company will lose their grip on the budget market as other competitors are plodding in the game.
