OPPO kills the notch with world’s first under-screen selfie camera

We can finally say goodbye to notched display for good in the future without having a motorized pop-up camera sliding in and out from the device. OPPO, after teasing the arrival of the world’s first under-screen selfie camera, has finally showcased the real thing for its users.

At MWC Shanghai 2019, the Chinese smartphone maker unveiled a new solution for providing an all-screen display through its Under Screen Camera (USC).

According to the company, the under-screen cameras are made possible by a camera with wider-than-average aperture diameter and greater pixel size, as well as algorithms that reduce haze and improve both HDR and white balance.

Sadly, OPPO didn’t announce an actual smartphone sporting the under screen camera which was quite an expected outcome and cautioned in a press release that the company’s new selfie camera would produce image quality “approaching that of mainstream smartphones.” Previously, OPPO’s VP Brian Shen also admitted in his Weibo post that the optical quality of the under screen camera will suffer “some loss” as every new tech needs time to be perfected.
